Seventy years ago, this couple are listening to some music on the beach thanks to a portable phonograph they built themselves, following the plans contained in the August 1956 issue of Radio News. The magazine notes that portable radios are more common than portable phonos, due to the power issues. It noted that even cheap acoustic phonos for children often had AC motors, and that DC motors would quickly deplete the batteries. The magazine noted that a hand-wound phonograph with a transistor amplifier was the ideal solution. It even specified the motor one could buy from the Sears catalog.
