Sixty years ago today, the September 18, 1964, issue of Life magazine carried this ad for GE’s answer to the Trans-Oceanic, the model P990 “World Monitor” receiver. The set covered five bands, 170-400 kHz longwave, 1.8-5.0 and 6.0-18 MHz shortwave, and the standard AM and FM broadcast bands. The 17-transistor set retailed for under $125, and the ad listed some of the many signals the set would pull in.
